The Quest for Fuzz
I have an amazing dog. He's not amazing in the sense that he can leap over tall buildings in a single bound, but he is amazing none the less. His name is Wimsey - (I know - what was I thinking?) and he is (supposed to be) a miniature schnauzer. He has some really great habits that I have never seen another dog do.
If you talk to him, he will sit at your feet and stare you straight in the eye for as long as you talk. He strains toward you until he actually starts to wheeze. You just know he really understands every single word you are saying.
He thinks the best place in the world to sit is on someone's feet. Not near them, on them. Not that I blame him for this one right now, because I wouldn't want to put my butt on this cold floor either.
He has a fascination with the word "goat". If you ever say it, he turns his head sideways and looks at you. If you say it several times, he starts to get really excited. I still can't figure out what he actually thinks I'm saying.
Best of all, is his constant quest for fuzz. Like all dogs, if you give him a stuffed animal that squeaks, the first thing he does is chew the squeaker until it dies. Then, predictably, he chews a hole in it and pulls the stuffing out. Now, the normal dog rips the toy open and spreads the stuffing everywhere in one afternoon, but not my dog. No - he actually chews the smallest possible hole in a toy (one that is barely big enough to get his teeth into) and he pulls tiny little bits out. This means it takes him months to actually remove all the fuzz from a toy. Right now he has a stuffed pig that he has been working on for over 6 months. What tenacity! He manages to turn the whole toy inside out through this tiny little whole until he finds a piece of fuzz about 1/4 the size of a cotton ball and then he proceeds to chew the fuzz happily. Another bonus to this fuzz removal method is that he eventually works his snout into the toy which causes his little schnauzer beard to be smoothed against his tiny little mouth and then to fan out like a lion's mane over his eyes. It's great! I wish I could catch it on film.
I keep thinking that eventually this pig will run out of fuzz - It looks completely empty, but then he always surprises me by finding more. He's laying at my feet right now working on it.
At least he's not on my feet.
